Tongue cancer

Hi, new to this group. My husband had surgery for tongue cancer 5 weeks ago. As he is also in AF it was decided not to remove his lymph nodes. On Thursday we had a follow up appointment and was told at a recent ct scan they found a nodul on one of his lungs which they want to keep an eye on. The doctor said it was very small but he has been booked in for another scan at the end of this month. We are both worried sick. This news took us both by surprise and we didn’t ask any questions. I am wondering what a nodule is and do they suspect cancer in the lung? The cancer on his tongue was 8mm and not too deep and has all been removed. Could this have traveled to his lung? Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your husband's recent diagnosis of tongue cancer I can appreciate that it is also worrying for you both that a lung nodule was picked up during his CT scan. This must not be easy.

Lung nodules (a small lump on the lung) are very common and are often picked up by chance on a CT scan. The majority of nodules are not cancerous and can be caused by scarring or infection. It is usual practice to have another scan to see if there are any changes. It is quite possible the nodule is not linked to cancer; however, because of your husband's recent diagnosis, the doctors will want to make sure there are no changes to the nodule.

I can imagine this is an overwhelming time for you both. I wondered if your husband's team is aware of how worried you both are, and whether he has a specialist nurse (CNS) he can talk to who knows his situation.

You would also be welcome to give our nurses a call on the helpline and talk things through if this helps. We are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma
