My husband is caring for someone with chicken pox im on chemotherapy.

My husband is currently on shift at a 2:1 children’s home.
the child he is looking after with his colleague has just been diagnosed by gp as having chickenpox.

He is due home on Friday, i have undergone my 4th chemo after operations for breast cancer. Will it be safe for him to see me and come home after his shift ends?

Thank you

  • Hello, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are having chemotherapy. This must not be easy.

The risk of your husband getting chicken pox will depend on whether or not he has had it before. If he has been infected before, then the risk of his becoming infected again is very low, and therefore it is unlikely he would pass anything on to you.

Likewise, if your husband hasn't had chicken pox before and he does become infected, but you have had chicken pox, your risk of getting it a second time will be very low. In this case, it should be safe to see your husband.

If you are concerned, it might be worth just clarifying with the chemo unit where you are having your treatment, as they know your situation.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to come back to us. If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline, we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, freephone 0808 800 4040.
