Delay in referal

My wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 6 weeks ago and we are waiting for an appointment with an oncologist, the cancer was missed on a routine scan in August 2024 and also on a routine scan in august 2025,should we have to wait this long for a referral.

  • Hi Barry and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that your wife has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This must be a difficult time for both of you.

NHS England has introduced a new target called the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS).

One of the targets is that there should be no longer than  2 months (62 days) wait between the date the hospital receives an urgent suspected cancer referral and the start of treatment.

If you are concerned about waiting too long for information or to start treatment, you can reach out to your hospital specialist through their secretary.

If you haven’t already done so, consider contacting the hospital’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to voice your concerns.

If the hospital has a Macmillan Information Centre, you may also find additional information there.

You may also like to inform your GP that your wife has not yet been seen by a hospital specialist.

I appreciate that waiting is difficult so I hope you know more about your wife's situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
