Upper Gi Tract MRI

Hi, i’m suffering with back pain and side pain and central burning above my rice cage. I had an ultrasound and x-ray. My results from SAU was my pancreatic duct is enlarged, the registra and doctors was concerned as she couldn’t find any gallstones which could mean it could possibly be cancer.
I’ve got an emergency MRI in the next few weeks. I was looking for some information regarding this. Is it possible for it to be not cancerous or do I need to Prep myself for the worst. I have a 11mo baby, I’m 24 years old. I’m just trying to ask as many questions. If I did have it does it mean it’s too late to treat as it’s always late diagnosed? I’m a bit scared and a lot of things running through my head. Trying to stay positive.

Thankyou for relying.

  • Hello Stephanie2001, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are experiencing symptoms, and that you are waiting to have an MRI scan following an abnormal ultrasound and X-ray. This must not be an easy time for you.

Waiting for tests and test results can be stressful and cause anxiety, and it is often a time when people may feel they have no control over what is happening to them.

Having abnormal tests does not mean you have cancer, and pancreatic cancer would be rare in someone of your age. It tends to mostly affect older people who are over 65 years old; it is unusual in people under the age of 40.

Unfortunately, until you have your MRI scan, no one can say what is causing the enlarged pancreatic duct. Living with this uncertainty is difficult.

I hope you do not have to wait too long for your next scan and that you can get some answers soon. In the meantime, if you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, you can give us a call between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
