Post-cancer check ups - how would they know if there is any recurrence if they only carry out physical examinations?

Hi,

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer (Stage 1A2) earlier this year. I'm a few weeks post-total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy (plus sentinel lymph nodes removal). Pathology results came back good, clean lymph nodes.

Obviously it's great news, but I'm freaked out about the future. I've been told I'm having check-ups every four months but no MRI and CT scans. Is this normal? How would they know if there is any recurrence if they only do physical exams?

Thanks!

  • Hello Kat25 and thanks for your post

Many people worry about the cancer coming back and this is a very common feeling to go through. Maggie's has some information about about coping with uncertainty and the fear of recurrence on their website.

Stage 1A2 is a very early cancer and the outlook is usually very good, especially since your surgery went well and your lymph nodes were clear. This usually puts you in a lower risk group for recurrence. Because of this, most follow up appointments are based on regular physical examinations rather than routine scans.

Most recurrences (if they do happen) are usually picked up either through symptoms you notice yourself, or through physical examination at your follow up appointments. You won’t usually have other routine scans and tests unless you report any symptoms that need checking because the risk of recurrence is very low.

However, it’s important to contact your doctor or specialist nurse if you have any concerns between appointments. You should also contact them if you notice any new symptoms such as bleeding, pain or changes in bladder or bowel habits. You don’t have to wait until your next visit.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
