Liver Cancer - father just diagnosed. How long do you have to wait for a biopsy?

Good evening, I have just found out that my father has liver cancer. He has to wait for a biopsy to be done. Would you know how long it may take and if we will be told what stage it is?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry to read about your dad's situation. This must be a difficult time for you both.

The time it takes for a biopsy to be done and processed can vary within NHS Trusts. Sometimes, it can be done within a couple of weeks, but in other cases it may take a little longer. Once the biopsy is taken, results usually take two weeks or more to come back.

The biopsy results will help confirm the type of liver cancer it is. To work out the stage ( extent) of the cancer, the doctors need to look at the biopsy results alongside the scan results. Your dad will be told what stage his cancer is once all the results are known, but this may not come straight after the biopsy alone.

I hope this is of some help and you both find out more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

     Kind regards,

    Celene
