Lung cancer surgery - one week on and I'm feeling so tired and in pain. Is this normal?

Diagnosed through cancer screening with a 9mm adenoma carcinoma in lower lobes left lung. Had surgery on17th this month but a week on so tired and in pain. Wanted to know if this is normal. Also legs feel very weak. Docs have said  this is totally curable but not sure if that's the truth. advice would be appreciated.

  • Hello Ickyfud and thank you for your recent post

I am sorry to learn that you have recently had surgery to remove a lung cancer. This must not be easy for you.

It can take some while to recover from surgery a few weeks possibly longer depending on the type of surgery you had. I am not surprised you are still having pain and feel tired and weak as it has been only a week since your surgery. However, if you are concerned the pain is getting worse then do contact the hospital that treated you as they may need to assess you. Hopefully you have been given contact details of who to get in touch with.

The risk of the cancer coming back depends on many things such as the size of the tumour and how far it has spread (stage), how well a person responds to treatment and how well a person is generally, whether they have other health conditions.

If it is an early cancer, that is just within the lung and has not spread, the aim of the treatment will be to get rid of the cancer. Only your doctors who know your situation can say what they think the outcome may be. If you have a specialist nurse you can get hold of who is involved in your care, it might be helpful to give them a call, and talk through any concerns as they may be able to give you more reassurance.

I hope this helps in some way. If you would like to talk thing through with one of our nurses on the helpline, you can call Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma

  • I felt tired for a couple of weeks after lobectomy. Some days are worse than others. The first two weeks are the worst. Then it gets better each week. It takes time to recover. I was off painkillers after four weeks. Hang in there it will get better. You will be uncomfortable for a while.
