Breast cancer now a lump on gum

Hi. I have had breast cancer twice. Once in 2014 and then a new primary in 2024. I have really struggled after the second diagnosis with anxiety and symptoms that have needed checking but so far all ok - touch wood!

I suddenly found a lump on my top gum above my canine tooth last week. I went to the dentist who has referred me but said maybe a damaged salivary gland. It is red with a purple tinge and is firm. My teeth around it are sensitive.

I am terrified this is my breast cancer. I literally can’t  cope anymore with worry. My life gets back on track and then a few weeks later - wham something else. I’m truly struggling to function

  • Hi there and thanks for getting in touch

I am sorry to hear about you cancer diagnoses and how this is causing you so much anxiety.

Symptoms can appear for lots of reasons and most will be harmless and unrelated to cancer. It is unlikely that this lump in your mouth is linked to your breast cancer so try not to over think things if you can.

It sounds like your anxiety is getting the better of you and affecting your everyday life. I hope you have spoken with your doctor about this so they can also help you to manage these thoughts and feeling better.

The charity Mind and Anxiety UK also have resources about managing health anxiety with suggestions of things to try and help you.

I hope you get your appointment soon about the lump in your mouth so you can be reassured that this isn't anything to be worried about.

    Take care

    Naomi
