What happens next?

Hi

being diagnosed with inoperable anal cancer in May this year and not even able to have radiotherapy or chemotherapy due to my other health conditions, the consultant has put me back to the care of my GP, with painkiller instructions, only.

I'm feeling a bit lost and abandoned now. I really want to know how this pans out, what are the next stages etc. the letter my consultant sent to my GP, copied to me, said life expectancy of between 7 months and 3 years, a huge difference. I know that I can’t change anything but I thought it would be monitored and I would get progression updates. I know that everyone is different but can you please tell what pathway untreated anal cancer takes.

thanks

  • Hi there and thanks for getting in touch

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you are unable to have any treatment, this must be a difficult time for you.

I do hope you have the support of friends and family around you to support you at this time.

It isn't unusual to be discharged from one specialist team at the hospital but often as well as being put back under the care of your GP you may also have been referred to the palliative care team as well. A palliative care team are usually made up of doctors and nurses working in both hospitals and the community to support patients and their loved ones. There is information about palliative care on the website.

This is something you can speak to your GP about and if not they can refer you to palliative care. Palliative care isn't just for the end of life and at first you may not need much input from them but as time goes on they can help manage any symptoms you may encounter. Palliative care is also about ensuring you have the best quality of life for as long as possible.

Often patients will be given the number of a palliative care nurse who can be contacted as needed. Often patients will be visited by their palliative care nurse when they are first referred so they can meet you and assess what your needs may be now and in the future. They can also liaise with other health professionals to ensure you have the support, care and equipment at every step.

There is also information about support at home for you and your family on the website that talks about other health professional who may become involved in your care.

You may also like to look up on the cancer care map for local organisations who are able to offer various support to you by inputting your postcode.

I hope this is helpful to you but please get back in touch with any more questions you may have. You are also welcome to call our helpline if you prefer to speak over the phone. We're here weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
