Kidney cancer - suffering with swollen flank and abdomen since surgery 4 months ago. The feeling is so uncomfortable

I had radical abdominal surgery with removal of kidney four months ago,  since operation I suffer with swollen, blown up flank and abdomen, I have large 10 inch scar so understand that it could take a while to improve. This blown up feeling is most uncomfortable and affects my Life.  Seen my gp and today saw a consultant who specialises in kidney cancer.  He felt my stomach and said all ok and the stomach muscles, scar damage take ages to recover,  Has or is anyone suffering like me.  Thanks

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about you operation earlier this year and the time it is taking to recover from this surgery.

Hopefully others on here will post their stories but you may also find it helpful to post your question on a different thread as well as on the ask the nurses.

As the consultant has said it isn't unusual for it to take a while for things to settle down and your body to repair and recover from such a large operation.

Do let your doctor know if there is anything else they can do to help ease any symptoms you may be experiencing, but in regards to swelling this will require time and patience.

You may need to think about the clothes you are wearing to allow for the swelling and any discomfort that clothing pressing into this area may cause. Try and look after yourself as best you can with regular light exercise and eating a healthy and balanced diet to ensure you are getting all the vitamins, minerals and protein to promote healing to your body.

Hopefully things will start to improve for you soon but if things don't or you notice things go in the other direction do speak with your specialist team again.

All the best to you and please get back in touch if you need to. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays if you prefer to speak with us over the phone instead.

    Take care

    Naomi
