Please give advice Xx

Hey

um I’m currently a teen whose grandfather has been diagnosed with prostate cancer - it spread to his bones

He’s had a fall today and is currently in hospital as a result of an impact on his hip -

I’m really scared and I don’t know what to do - he’s always been a part of my life and I don’t want to lose him - what is Chemotherapy and how does it work ?

Thank you for your support

  • Hello Crabcake101

I just saw your post and wanted to say hi so you dont feel alone at this worrying time.

    • I am sorry to hear your grandfather has cancer and this is a good place to get information and support the questions for nurses chat line is very helpful and although you may feel some of it is aimed at younger children / teens than yourself the section for talking to children about cancer is very helpful and i found it useful as a much older adult. You will find it explains chemotherapy and other treatments for cancer on there.

The  Macmillan website also has a chat and support line which is open 8-8 every day of the week. No question is too small.

If you can talk to family and a trusted teacher so they know how you feel. Hopefully you can support each other and you can give grandad your love and support too. One step a time you will get through this together

    Sending strength

    Kind wishes RB

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your grandad's situation, this is understandably a worrying time for you.

Do talk with your family about your grandad and ask them any questions you have to get a better understanding of what is going on.

we have a page of the website titled what is chemotherapy? that explains what this is. Generally chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that aims to kill cancer cells. Unfortunately not all cancers can be got rid of completely, especially if it has spread to other parts of the body.

The doctors involved in your grandads care will however be wanting to control and manage his cancer for as long as possible alongside a good quality of life.

As I say do talk to your family, friends and your teacher about how this is making you feel so they can support you. There is also Hope support services a charity that supports children and young people who have a loved one with a serious illness.

You are welcome to chat away on here but our nurse helpline is also open weekday 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you would like to speak to us too.

Take care and I hope your grandad can come home soon.

    Naomi
