What to expect with immunotherapy

Hello my Mum was diagnosed with lung cancer stage 4 last Nov, it was treated with radiotherapy and chemo which did reduce it a little but it has moved into the blood and metastised to adrenal gland, pancreas and now after recent brain scan to brain albeit very small atm. She is due to start immunotherapy next week....

After caring for her through  chemo and 4 weeks of radiotherapy and its side effects how does immunotherapy side effects differ? (Obviously know it depends person to person but in general are.they not so severe?

Thanks

  • Hello BeeHappy13, and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that your mum has stage 4 lung cancer. This must be a difficult time for you all.

Immunotherapy works differently from chemotherapy by using the immune system to kill the cancer cells. Chemotherapy works by killing the cancer cells directly. We have general information on immunotherapy on our website, which describes how it works.

Some of the side effects can be similar to chemotherapy, such as fatigue (tiredness), loss of appetite, and nausea. This will depend on the treatment given.

It is always difficult to predict how a person will react to their medication. This is because, as you say, everyone is different and will respond differently.

Once you know which immunotherapy your mum will be having, you can find information on the specific side effects of that treatment on our Cancer drugs A to Z list.

I hope this helps, and the links above are useful. Please get back to us for any further information. You can also give our nurses a call on the helpline between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
