Lump under left breast.

Hi all.

Early last week I felt some sort of lump under my left breast ( where the bra line would be) its under my skin, feels semi hard and is slightly sore when I press on it.

Im not sure if this is something I should be worried about? Im extremely busy with work at the moment so I havent the time to book a GP appointment. Is this something I can wait and see if it goes away, or should I get it checked ASAP?

I have no family history of breast cancer that i am aware of. Im 33 years old.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thank you.

  • Hello Aida 92 and thanks for your post,

We would always recommend that if you find a lump in your breast that you get it checked out by your GP.

The majority of lumps are your age are benign (not cancerous) but we can't say if this is the case in your situation.

You can read about benign breast conditions here.

I would advise you to get it checked just to rule anything serious out.

I hope you know more soon.

If you would like to talk this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Aida92

I'm bit older than you. I had exactly the same symptoms in the same location. I didn't worry about it too much for a good while but it wouldn't go away.

Ended up being referred to breast clinic by my GP. After having mamogram mine was classed as an undetermined hard mass that was biopsied. Mine unfortunately ended up being diagnosed as neuroendocrine cancer.

I would urge you to get referred and checked out just to be on a safe side. Pain is rather unusual with tumors and as Catherine says most lumps end up being benign or cysts, especially at your age. All the best.

  • Hi Aida,

It is impossible to tell until you have your lump investigated. As our moderator Catherine says, you should always het any lump checked out. Like Mimi, I am also a lot older than you, but I also discovered a lump in the same position, which turned out to be cancerous. At your age, this is hopefully a benign cyst or fibroadenoma. You may be busy at present, but what price do you put on your life? Make an appointment with your GP and put your mind to rest.

Please keep in touch and let us know how it turns out. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Mimmi,

I have now been to the GP and have been referred to the breast clinic.

Im quite scared and do not know what to expect.

    I guess time will tell.

  • Hi Aida,

I am really glad you've got your refferal sorted.

My experience at the breast clinic was great. The staff was lovely and my mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy was not anywhere near as scary or painful as I thought they might be. It took about 10 days to get my results.

I know it's difficult not to feel anxious but it will be over before you know it. I was where you are about 6 weeks ago. I've only had my diagnosis for couple of weeks so still getting used to it.

Wish you all the very best and let us know how you get on. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

    Miriam

  • Hi Aida,

You have done the right thing, even if only to give yourself some peace of mind. We are all scared at this point, but here's hoping that it turns out to be nothing untoward. Stay awa from Google while you are waiting for your appointment. Much of the information is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the more spectacular cases. This will only serve to scare you further. It is probably a good thing that you are so busy at work, as this should help to distract you while you wait.

The usual tests for someone of your age are an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. You will find that the staff in these clinics are usually very understanding. Try not to panic, chances are that all will be fine at your age, but it would be silly not to investigate.

Keeping my fingers crossed for good news!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Miriam,

I am 16 years post-diagnosis, so even with a cancer diagnosis, there is hope!

    Kind regards,

I will try my best to stop overthinking everything for now (although very hard!) Fingers crossed its nothing untoward.

    Wishing you all well
