Hi there and thanks for posting
I think we may have spoken on the helpline this morning about this and hope you can make a well informed decision about your treatment soon.
All treatments unfortunately come with some risk, in the case of brachytherapy there is a small risk of a second cancer diagnosis but if this does occur it is usually many years after treatment has finished, often several decades later.
It is also worth noting that the data available in regards to this risk is from patients treated in the late 90's, early 2000 where brachytherapy and imaging planning and machines weren't as precise as they are now. Newer and more recent techniques means that the main radiation dose is directed to the cancer site minimising radiation to the surrounding healthy tissues.
As you will be aware each patient newly diagnosed will be discussed by a MDT Multi Disciplinary Team to discuss which treatment options would be best give the type, stage ( size and extent) of the cancer. They also take into consideration the general health and fitness levels and for brachytherapy I understand that age in regards to life expectancy is also taken into account for the risk of these later side effects.
For most patients the risk of a second cancer is small but do discuss this further with your team if you think it would be helpful in making your final decision.
I hope this helps, as I said earlier do get back in touch if you would like to.
Best wishes
Naomi
