Post TURBT

I have two questions please:

I had a TURBT procedure on 28 August. Since then my trips to urinate have been frequent with limited warning and I've felt an uncomfortable sting at the end of each flow.  These symptoms have lessened over time.

However:  Wiping after urination yesterday showed pink.  Today it was red.

Ought I do anything about this or is blood in my urine two weeks after this procedure something to be expected?

Also I have been given an appointment for a CT THORAX, ABDOMEN, PELVIS with contrast but not until 23 August.

I was told results of the TURBT would take about two weeks.

Am I likely to see my consultant before the scan or might I have to wait until after the scan to get feedback from the TURBT?

  • Hello Villafont and thanks for your email.

It is quite normal to have blood in your urine for a couple of weeks after surgery but if it becomes heavier or you get clots then it is important to get in touch with your bladder team. We have some information on our website about transurethral removal of a bladder tumour .

If the stinging or burning gets worse then do get in touch with your team as there is always a chance of infection.

Normally the doctors get as much information about a person's cancer and then they discuss this in a bladder multidisciplinary team meeting where all the different doctors involved in your care meet to discuss treatment for bladder cancer

You may hear something before hand but in most cases they will get in touch when all the tests are available and they have had their meeting. This formal Meeting only happens once a week.

I hope this is clear. You are very welcome to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine
