Changes in size of breast years after radiotherapy

I had radiotherapy in 2018 on my right side.  I was a 38G, recently changed to a 40F.

The last time I saw my surgeon about 18 months ago I mentioned the decreasing size of the breast that had been treated.  He said that this is a normal side effect of radiotherapy.  I was given options for plastic surgery should I choose.  I opted not to do anything about it as the size difference wasn't a problem.

Now through, the difference is very obvious.  Probably at least two cup sizes smaller than the left.  As I'm 59, there is no doubt that some of the loss is age related.

My question is: is this continuing reduction in size normal 6 years after treatment and should I see my GP or contact the surgeon to make him aware?  I feel as though it's going to continue to shrink which wouldn't look so odd if it was bilateral.

Thanks for reading.

  • Hello, and thank you for your post,

As nurses not involved in your care, we cannot say if your breasts will continue to shrink, but if this is something you are concerned about, it is best to discuss it with your breast surgeon or a specialist breast nurse (CNS) if you are still in contact with them, as they know your situation. If this is difficult, then do speak with your GP.

Breast shapes and size can change because of breast cancer treatment, or for other reasons, such as if a person has gained weight or has experienced weight loss.

I hope you can get some support with this soon.
