Varicose veins

Hi, my chemo, surgery, radiotherapy has finished but I now have a horrible knee which is the same side as my cancer. I am not overweight, excercise etc and am wondering if there is a correlation having had treatment and is there a link? Have been told to wear compression stockings to help but wondering if anyone has ideas or suggestions?

thanks and have a good day

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation. This must be a difficult time for you.

Varicose veins aren't directly caused by breast cancer but the treatment you've had can affect circulation and the lymph system on that side, which may make veins worse or more noticeable.

I think it's important to wear compression stockings as advised. It's also important to stay active, put your leg up when resting., and avoid sitting or standing for long periods.

Do speak to your GP or specialist if your veins are painful or if the swelling increases. There are treatments that may help. It's unlikely to mean anything about the cancer coming back, but worth mentioning to them so they can check for clots or lymphoedema.

I hope this helps and you get some improvement soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
