Can chemotherapy tablets be transferred in salvia?

Hello, really sorry if this wastes your time. I called 111 but they referred me to the NHS website but I couldn't find anything. My mum has stage 4 breast cancer. She's been on chemotherapy tablets for the last couple months. Yesterday was the first day shes felt well enough to visit. I asked her if she wanted to feed my baby as I know she feels like shes missing  out on her first grandchild. I went to the loo come out and she told me she used her tongue to measure the temperature of the food and then fed it to him. I wasn't gone long so it would of been one or two spoonfuls. Is this something to worry about? Can the chemicals be transferred via salvia? He spit up abit yesterday and slept in late but otherwise fine.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It's understandable to feel anxious when it comes to your baby's health, especially with your mum going through chemotherapy treatment.

Chemotherapy tablets are processed by the body and a tiny amount of the drug may sometimes be found in bodily fluids like urine, stools and saliva.

The amount that could possibly pass through saliva from something like tasting baby food is extremely small and highly unlikely to cause any harm to your baby. So please try not to worry about this.

I hope this has been of some help.

    Kind Regards,

    Celene
