New diagnosis of grade 2 breast cancer. I'd prefer a Mastectomy, but doctors want to do a lumpectomy

Hi, grade 2 cancer awaiting staging. Drs want to do lumpectomy but I prefer mastectomy. I am 66, thanks

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to learn that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This must not be easy.

The type of breast cancer surgery doctors will recommend will depend on several things: the size of the cancer, the position of the cancer in the breast, if there is more than one area of the breast affected, and personal wishes.

I wondered if you had the opportunity to discuss with your breast cancer team that the type of surgery you would prefer is a mastectomy. As they know your situation, the best person to speak to about your surgery options is your breast surgeon or your specialist breast nurse.

I hope you can get support with this soon. You have not asked any specific questions; if you have any, please feel free to get back to us. You can also speak with one of the nurses on the helpline by calling freephone 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm
