GP requested Urgent MRI where do the results go?

Hi, to speed things up my GP recently ordered an Urgent MRI directly without referring me to a consultant or dept. I had the spinal MRI within 2 days of the request being put in, but almost two weeks on, all I get off the GP is 'We don't have the results'.

My question is will the results go back to the GP to then be referred back out to a hospital dept or will they be checked when they are produced and be sent to the relevant hospital dept and the GP copied in when a decision has been made on the findings?

Thanks in advance

  • Hello, and thank you for posting. I am sorry you are in a difficult position of waiting for results; this must be incredibly hard.

Usually, Scan results are sent back to whoever did the referral.

It is not usual for results to take a few weeks to come through due to the amount done daily and the procedures involved. The scans all need to be examined, reported on, and these need to be checked and verified. Sometimes the results may be double and triple-checked by teams outside of that hospital trust.

I appreciate that the wait is difficult, but unfortunately, nothing can speed this process up.

Hopefully, you will have all the information soon.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
