Blood test for Cancer

Hi,

I have always been relatively fit & healthy, none smoker/drinker & a healthy eater, however 5 years ago I started getting unusual, symptoms. Ie I gained 2 stone in 8 months, I knocked my elbow & the bruise was from my wrist to my shoulder, I am in constant severe pain/body aches, hot sweats at night to name but a few of the truly awful symptoms.

As someone hardly ever needing to go to a GP in the past, I now find myself constantly visiting the GP. I was given blood tests & after many years, diagnosed with Fibromyalgia  Now, if I visit the GP with a new symptom (ie, I am struggling to swallow & my voice is very weak/horse) I am told it’s ’just my fibromyalgia’.

my question is, can all cancers be detected (or at least in indication given)  from just having a blood tests? I really do not want to be bothering the GP if there’s no need, I just feel I’m not taken seriously when I do go.

As my symptoms are constantly changing (as anyone who has/knows about fibromyalgia knows), how can I be sure a symptom is ‘just fibromyalgia?).

thank you.

Sue

  • Hello Sue, and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and that you are experiencing symptoms that are causing you concern. This must not be easy.

Blood tests can provide doctors with a wealth of information about a person's general health, and if any abnormalities are detected, further tests are needed to confirm a diagnosis. Most cancers can not be diagnosed just from a blood test.

The GPs have guidelines for when to refer someone to the hospital to have tests and rule out cancer. If this is something you are worried about, then it is worth having a chat with your GP about your concerns, as they know your situation, and they may be able to give you a bit more reassurance.

I hope this helps in some way. Please feel free to get back to us. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
