Chemo for CUP

My stepfather has been diagnosed with CUP. A metastasis in his humerus fractured the bone and he waited months before anything was done. He ended up with an intramudallary nail but since the tumour has grown excessively. He has nodules in several parts of his body and recently started radiotherapy. He is unsure whether to have chemotherapy. Drs are keen for him to start but it is not guaranteed to do anything. We totally respect his decision but wanted to know if others had found chemo for CUP effective in relieving symptoms and controlling growth?

  • Hello Jordan and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your stepfather. I can understand that this must be a difficult time for you all.

Every case is very different so it is difficult to compare one situation with another.

There is always the option of starting chemotherapy and seeing how your stepfather is getting on with it. Your stepfather will be reviewed before each cycle of treatment to see how he is managing. Your step father can always stop chemotherapy at any point.

I am not sure if your step father is having any pain as chemotherapy may help slow down the cancer but of course there are no certainties. We do have several pages on our website on Cancer of Unknown Primary which you find might help.

You have posted in 'ask the nurses' but if you post on another thread or start your own then you may find that you get more responses.

I can understand that it is a difficult decision to make. Do encourage your step father to talk through the possible treatment options so he can have a good idea of any potential side effects. It may also be a good idea to ask how often he would be monitored if he did decide to go down the chemotherapy route.

If you would like to ring and discuss any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call.

the number to ring is freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
