3 Phase CT scan showing a lesion - have been told it's most likely kidney cancer

We have been told my husband, after MRI and CT 3 phase scans, has more than likely a kidney cancer.

The consultation wasn’t very clear. We are due to be seen at the hospital on Sat 24/9

Is the lesion they have detected always malignant? Does the 3 phase scan determine this without a biopsy?

  • Hello Redmini 126 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that your husband is going through tests for kidney cancer and I can understand what an unsettling time it must be for you both.

We have some information on our website about tests for kidney cancer. A triple phase or 3 phase CT scan takes images of the kidneys at three different time points after contrast dye is injected. It helps the doctor understand how blood flows through the kidneys and can help identify any unusual changes or abnormalities.

I can't say what the consultant will say about the results and whether they are sure this is a cancer. In some cases they take a biopsy of the kidney to try and get more information.

It is important that your husbands team get as much information as they can if they suspect cancer as it will have a bearing on how they decide to treat it.

Try and take one day at a time and not over think it for now.

If you or your husband would like to ring and through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
