Squamous Cell Carcinoma with horn

Had this removed 5 days ago. The consultant said that the pathology results will confirm but he is pretty certain it’s SCC. It was on my chest between my breasts and had been there for about 16 months. I went to my GP in January and was referred to dermatology but didn’t get an appointment till August. As soon as they looked at it they said we need to get that removed asap but I still waited another 3 weeks. I had been calling the clinic as I had guessed what it was and I explained to them that I had a malignant melanoma in 1988 so I was concerned. I was told I just had to wait my turn as they are very busy. I completely understand that but now I’m concerned if the surgeon is correct it had an additional 8 months to spread.
I just need to know how long people have had to wait for the results as I’m feeling so anxious about what the future may hold for me. I am worried what the implications may be for my family as I have children and the youngest 2 are only in their teens. Can anyone advise how long they waited? He told me it could be up to a month and I understand different areas will have different turn around times but this seems such a long time to wait. Thank you for taking the time to read this

  • Hello HAB777, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation. This must not be easy.

Waiting for tests and test results can be very stressful and cause a lot of anxiety, especially when you have been waiting for such a long time.

Generally, you can expect to receive urgent biopsy results between 2 and 4 weeks, although this timeframe may vary from hospital to hospital.

If you have not heard within a couple of weeks, you could try contacting the consultant's secretary for more information.

A lot of people find waiting for results difficult, and that they do not have any control during this time. Some people find it helpful to distract themselves by carrying on with daily activities such as working, but for others, this is not so easy. There is no right or wrong way.

I hope you get your results soon. In the meantime, if you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
