Pet scan tomorrow on 12 mm lung nodule. I'm worried it could be cancer

I have been told I have a 12mm lung nodule, I have a pet scan tomorrow, I’ve got no symptoms that I know of but I’m just worried this could be cancer. I’m thinking all sorts. I’m 52 years old and I’ve been told the nodule has smooth edges but I’m worried this could be cancer

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Lung nodules are quite common and may be nothing to worry about. In many cases these are benign (non-cancer related) but in a small number of patients it might mean that it's cancer . So they will need monitoring.

Doctors follow clinical guidance when looking at lung nodules. This helps them to decide what types of nodules need to be followed up to see if they change. It is often the case of repeating scans and monitoring any changes in the nodules.

There is some information written by the NHS on lung nodules which you may find helpful to read.

I think the best thing to do would be to talk things over with your doctor when your PET scan results are known. They should be able to tell you what the next steps are.

I hope this helps and that everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
