Oral cancer - partner has returned from dentist and found out a bump she has could be cancerous

Hello everyone, I’m feeling very lost with this and hoping someone may be able to help in anyway possible please.
My partner has just returned from the dentist after having a little bump checked in the space where she has previously had a tooth removed. The dentist has said he thinks it’s cancerous. However there is a three month minimum wait time after referral to maxiofacial for biopsy. It seems shocking to me that that would be the case, I have suggested that private treatment would be something to look at but apparently it would still be the same wait time. Everything I have read suggests early treatment to be the best for a positive outcome. Sorry if I’m rambling it’s just such a shock.

  • Hi Kobe 1 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to read about your partner’s situation and appreciate how difficult it is waiting for things to happen.

NHS England has introduced a new target called the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS). The target is that you should not wait more than 28 days from referral to find out whether you have cancer or not.

Maybe your partner could speak to their GP and explain about the wait for an appointment. They may be able to do something.

You may find it useful to read our webpage on Seeing Your GP With Symptoms Of Mouth And Oropharyngeal Cancer | Cancer Research UK

Each hospital has a Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) which people can contact to raise a concern or make a complaint

Waiting for any length of time when you are worried can be stressful. Unfortunately, the maxillofacial department is very busy, and there can be long waiting times for appointments.

Patients in England possess the right to determine the location for their non-urgent NHS treatment, which may involve opting for an alternative hospital to possibly decrease waiting times.

You might find it beneficial to visit Your Choices in the NHS website.

Additionally, you can explore My Planned Care for information regarding specific hospitals and their respective waiting times.

There are no maxillofacial waiting times lists for private, as they can vary significantly by hospital and the specific procedure.

However, you can find waiting times for private or self-funding patients on individual hospital websites or websites such as Go Private

I hope you can get this sorted out soon. All the best, take care.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.
