Worrying wait

I’m 25 yrs old and have had a large lump in my neck for a while it’s been felt by a doctor they told me it was okay but 3 weeks ago Iv had a small lump appear in my groin which has been checked by 2 doctors the first put me on antibiotics these did nothing so then the next one said I need to wait 6weeks to see if it goes down I’m convinced it’s some kind of lymphoma and so worried 6weeks is even more time for it to spead in my body. I have an 18month old at home also which makes me cry every single day at the thought of not seeing him grow up why is it such a wait for doctors to refer you for scans and tests I’m so so worried and as I said I’m fully convinced it’s cancer and I’m so scared it’s consuming my life everyday doing research and seeing how other people have done wether they survived or didn’t make it

  • Hello, and thank you for your post

I am sorry to learn that you are having symptoms that are causing you concern. This must not be easy.

We cannot say what the cause of your symptoms might be. It is only a doctor who can assess you and send you for any necessary tests who can say.

If the doctors are concerned that someone may have cancer, there are strict guidelines for when they should refer them to the hospital.

I wondered if your GP is aware of how concerned you are about cancer and how the anxiety is affecting you or whether they have said what the cause of your symptoms might be. They are the best person to discuss this with as they know your situation.

If you are having difficulties managing anxiety there are helpful tips on the NHS website and on the Anxiety UK website.

I hope this helps in some way. If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
