Care at home

Hello, My mum is 83, lives at home alone, I'm here only daughter & live 2 hours away. She has liver cancer & is just about to have surgery. Is there any help I can get her whilst she is recovery as I can only stay with her the first couple of days then have to be back at work.

  • If she I'd being treated at an nhs hospital they will assess if she is able to manage at home before they discharge her. If they feel she needs some support they will make referrals and put care calls in place before sending her home

  • Hello Kes 139 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that your mum is having liver surgery. I can understand how difficult it must be when you live so far away.

A lot will depend on the type of surgery. If you can attend a preop appointment with your mum you may be able to find out the type of surgery and how long she is likely to be in hospital for.

We have some information on our website about life after liver surgery and what to expect.

Your mum will be assessed before she leaves hospital by the discharge team. There is some information about support after you leave hospital.

It maybe a question of seeing how your mum is after her surgery and what help and support she may need.

I would talk to the nurses and doctors on the ward once she has had her surgery and you know more.

You are welcome to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
