Partial Results after Breast Biopsy meaning?

Hi I went for a breast biopsy last week after nipple leakage.I had a biopsy on a 0.5mm lump.I rang this morning to be told that only unfortunately there were only a partial result and that it would be discussed next week at the mdt meeting.I am racking my brains as to what this means.. does it mean some of my results are lost, sample not big enough, some of them sent on to some one else to check? It was just she used the word unfortunately.I said are the results leaning one way or the other she said no and that some one would be intouch after the meeting.

Please can any one advise me what this could mean? I cant eat or sleep- thanks

  • Hi Laurenbob,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that your results are only partial. This can be very frustrating, as it probably means further tests to get a clearer picture of what is happening. Many people panic when a result is inconclusive, but it doesn't always mean bad news. It is impossible to say what the problem with your results is. Not all results are clear cut. With biopsies, they may not have got a big enough sample, or they may have taken it from the wrong location, some results can also be borderline and may need re-testing. With mammogram and ultrasound, the pictures generated can be indistinct and may need to be taken again.

Staff are not permitted to give you any results over the phone - the only person who can do that is your consultant, although most prefer to give them in person. I hope that they hold the MDT meeting soon, so that they can let you know, as "the unknown" is always a very uncomfortable place to be. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much for reply.I have been going out of my mind literally with with myriad of emotions. It does make a whole lot more sense to me and I have can grasp more what 'might' be happening with my results.

Thank you for all you do xx

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry we were unable to get back to you over the weekend but it looks like Jolamine one of the forum members has popped on and given you some good advice.

Waiting for test results is often an anxious time and to be told they only have a part result without knowing the full details is bound to cause you worry.

Until you speak with the breast care team there is no way of knowing what has or hasn't been seen in the biopsy sample or what may need to happen next.

Unfortunately there are times when further tests are needed but if this is the case for you the team involved will explain exactly what needs to happen and why.

Try and look after yourself as best you can, I understand that being worried can keep people awake at night and to lose their appetite but this won't help you. Distract your thoughts by keeping busy and active, go for a walk, meet up with a friend and try and eat something nourishing.

I hope you get further information soon and a better understanding of your situation.

Do get back in touch if needed or give us a call on 0808 800 4040 mon-fri 9-5 if you prefer.

    Take care

    Naomi
