Is swelling and lumps getting bigger following breast biopsy?

My breasts are uncomfortable and the lumps in my breast are bigger and more uncomfortable. I knew about one lump but not about the lump in my other breast which was discovered in the mammogram prior to the biopsy however now the lump in my unknown breast is now physically able to be felt and tender, also the bruising on that breast was extremely bad post biopsy?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your situation and that you are awaiting biopsy results.

It isn't unusual to experience some pain and discomfort and swelling of the breast tissues after a biopsy and hopefully this will settle down soon.

At the moment there is no way of knowing what these lumps are being caused by. Sit tight as best you can for now until you get the results and speak to the breast unit.

I hope everything turns out okay for you.

Do get back in touch if needed or if you rather give us a call on the helpline the number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi

Thank you for getting in touch.

my appointment to get my results was moved until next Friday, but during the last week the lump in my right breast which had no visible lump and I was unaware of it until the mammogram, I now bigger than the lump in my left breast which measured 27mm.

The lump is tender and also now is tender in my armpit, there is still 5 days until my next appointment should I be concerned or just await my appointment as I’m concerned about the rapid growth?

    Thanks

    Sue

  • Hello ReikiSue and thanks for getting back to us again.

I am sorry to hear about all the swelling and tenderness that you are getting. It is difficult to be able to assess it without being involved in your care. The discomfort may well be from the biopsy but there is always the chance of an infection if the swelling and tenderness is getting worse.

You could give the breast care nurse a ring at the breast clinic and they can let you know whether you need to be seen sooner.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Catherine
