Dizziness post bowel cancer op

My husband had bowel cancer op 2weeks ago and while his recovery has so far been remarkable he is suffering major dizziness to the point he has to return to bed. He has not had any post op support so far with no appointments to see doctors until Sept. Could it be low iron or haemoglobin levels still? He is taking one 200mg Ferris sulphate daily. should be increase this? Is there an anti dizzy medication he can take ? It's making him miserable . Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi Francesanne and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your husband's recent surgery and the symptoms he is currently experiencing. I appreciate you want to do all you can to help him.

It is difficult for any of the nurses to determine what might be causing your husband’s dizziness. Only the doctors involved in his care can say what they think may be the cause. I recommend that you call his hospital specialist and inform them of how your husband is feeling.

I would not recommend increasing the ferrous sulfate. If it needs to be increased, then his doctor will do so. There is medication called stemetil that can be prescribed for nausea and dizziness. If your husband’s doctor believes the medication will help, they may prescribe it or a similar one.

I hope your husband feels better soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.
