Just diagnosed with spleen cancer

I’ve just been diagnosed with spleen cancer I’d like more information

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your situation. This must not be easy for you.

I was unsure what your situation is and whether you know the name of the cancer.

The spleen is a small organ on the left-hand side of the body and lies just above the stomach. It is part of the lymphatic system (immune system). The role of the spleen is to filter and store blood and make white blood cells, which help us to fight infection

Primary cancer ( original site where the cancer developed) of the spleen is a very rare cancer; an example of this type of cancer includes lymphoma and angiosarcoma.

The most common type of spleen cancer is when it is a secondary cancer. The cancer started elsewhere in the body and has spread to the spleen from another part of the body. An example of this will be lymphoma or leukaemia. Leukaemia is a cancer of the white blood cells, and lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. There are different types of leukaemia and lymphoma.

If you know the name of the type of cancer you have, then please get back to us and we will be able to guide you to the right information. You would also be welcome to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline. We are available between 9 and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040. I hope this helps in some way.
