Questions to ask Oncologist

What specific questions should I ask at my second appointment (first appointment was mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy).

  • Hello AxxG.  First off, ask what grade it is, such as 2, 3 or 4, just as an example.  I was quite advanced when my BC was first diagnosed.  I was stage 3, but that was 6 years ago and I am still here!  I also asked if it was curable, and he told me that it was no longer in the 'curable stage' but it could be treated and kept under control, which would give me some extra years. The best thing to do is to write a list of all the questions you have in your head, because I can assure you that your mind will go blank and you will come out of that meeting remembering all of the questions that you forgot to ask, so a written list is really a good idea.  Also, don't forget to ask what your treatment plan is going forward, and when the treatment is going to start, and what are the success stats for that particular treatment.  Basically, ask EVERY question that pops in to your head, and don't  forget to write it down on your list, and also don't forget that you have the RIGHT to ask as many questions as you need to ask.  Please don't be afraid that maybe you have too many questions, you have the RIGHT to ask, please don't forget that.  Good luck, xxx
