HPV 3 years in a row.

Hello all,

I had my first smear in 2023. I tested positive for high risk HPV and had some abnormal cells. I was asked to go in for a colposcopy and that was fine. Was asked to be seen a year later for another smear.

2024 I tested positive for high risk HPV again and was asked for another smear a year later.

Now 2025 and I’ve just received my results from my smear this year and it’s high risk HPV positive again. But they have said to come back in 3 years.

everything I read on the NHS website is saying I should go for another colposcopy or at least be seen in another year. I’m worried. I told the lady that done my smear that I’ve been having some irregular bleeding and had a random cut on my labia that was not from physical damage…

is this normal? 3 year recall after 3 consecutive years of HPV?

thank you xxx

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I can appreciate your question and concerns around this latest result.

It is very unusual to be returned to 3 yearly screening following another HPV positive cervical screening test. I suggest you speak with your surgery about this so they can chase it up with the screening service.

In regards to the symptoms you are having this needs to be looked into at outside of the screening programme ( which is carried out in otherwise healthy individuals). So I suggest arranging an appointment with your GP to discuss this.

I hope you know more and get soe more clarity about this soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
