Bowel cancer

My sister has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer that has spread to her ovaries and liver. She had a stent fitted and her bowel perforated which she is now recovering from. They have removed her ovaries at the same time. I understand everyone is different but what is her prognosis? Her husband isn't allowing us to visit her in hospital at the moment and I'm scared I might not get to see her. Thank you

  • Hello Kattibles and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your sister. This must be a difficult time for the family. It is difficult to be able to be able to say what your sister's situation maybe without being involved in her care.

The doctors may not know much more until your sister has recovered from her operation and they have worked out what her next steps maybe.

It may be early days since your sister had her operation so do give it another couple of days and hopefully you will have a chance to see your sister and you will have more of an idea about what will happen next.

If your sister is able to have any treatment the doctors will need to see how well she is able to respond to the treatment. Your sister may have a few courses of treatment and then the doctors will arrange a scan.

The aim of any treatment when a cancer is spread to other organs is to control the cancer but if a treatment is working well then this can go on for some time.

I can understand when you are removed from a situation and you can't see your sister I realise how difficult this must be.

If you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
