Diet

Hi, my mum has been diagnosed with colon cancer a couple of days ago. She stated that she has been advised to eat a low fibre diet but i have read the opposite on the internet. I have seen they advise a low fibre diet after surgery. Please could you give me some advice? I was not at her appointment so I am unsure what they have said to her and want to make sure she has the correct information as I’m sure it was a lot to take in.
thank you

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mums diagnosis, this must be a difficult time for you both.

Some patients diagnosed with bowel cancer will be advised to eat a low fibre diet prior to surgery in some cases. This is usually to reduce the risk of the bowel becoming blocked, especially if their is a narrowing in the bowel where the tumour is. A low fibre diet can also minimise any symptoms of diarrhoea, bloating or pain a patient may be experiencing because of the cancer.

I hope this is helpful but do get back in touch if you or your mum has any more questions.

Wishing your mum all the best with her treatment.

    Take care

    Naomi
