Tenderness of nipple - is this normal after having breast operation through the nipple, and radiotherapy?

I had my breast op last October for stage 1 grade 2 breast cancer. My surgeon went in through my nipple and therefore it had to be stitched back. I had 5 sessions of radiotherapy at Christmas. I have just had a mammogram which is clear but the area around my nipple is still very tender. Is this normal

  • Hi Wisteria 77 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the treatment you have had for breast cancer and the concerns you have over the tenderness you are feeling around your nipple area.

It is difficult for me to tell you that everything is normal as I am not directly involved in your care and I cannot make an assessment.

Breast Cancer Now has information about ongoing pain following breast surgery.

Some people can unfortunately have pain many months after the treatment has finished. Some people can developed tingling which can be associated with nerve damage and repair as the nerves are starting to regenerate.

If you have not spoken to your Breast Care Nurse recently then do give them a ring to let them know that the area is still tender.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
