  • Hi Dods,

A very warm welcome to our form. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms, but you have done the right thing by getting them investigated. I know that this is always a worrying wait, but it is really impossible to predict what the outcome will be. It is a fact that 80% of breast lumps that are referred to the breast clinic, turn out to be benign. Many are benign cysts or fibroadenoma.

There are three main tests carried out at a first visit. These are a mammogram, an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. Younger people don't usually have a mammogram, because their breasts are too dense for them to show up well on mammogram. The mammogram and ultrasound look at the size, shape and position of the lump. If it looks at all suspicious they will carry out a biopsy. This is the only way to be really certain whether or not there is any cancer present. It usually takes another 1-2 weeks to get the biopsy results back, so you may have to wait a little longer to get these back before you get a definite diagnosis.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Here's hoping for good news!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanx so much for getting back to me..yeah I'll keep in touch..im sure im just a worry head!!!!

  • Hi Dods,

That's perfectly understandable. A cancer diagnosis is a huge thing to try and get your head around. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and 1 of pre-cancer, all within a year. I had a lumpectomy first time and a double mastectomy for the second bout. That was all 15 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Please remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are worried about some breast symptoms and I can appreciate waiting to be seen at the breast clinic can be very stressful.

An urgent referral doesn't always mean a cancer diagnosis. In fact, the majority of people who are referred urgently do not have cancer. It just means that the doctors wants to be thorough and not delay anything if further tests are needed.

At the breast clinic it is likely that they will take a full history and do a physical examination. You will have a mammogram and possibly an ultrasound scan. Depending on the results, they will tell you if you need to have a biopsy. If you do, it can take a couple of weeks to get the results.

The charity Breast Cancer Now has information on what to expect at your appointment when you’ve been referred to the breast clinic.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. Also try and focus on what you can control right now by eating a good diet, getting enough rest, and doing some gentle activities that you enjoy.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
