Radiotherapy on bones

Does radiotherapy to hip and pelvis in a case of metastatic prostate cancer weaken the bones significantly?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Radiotherapy to the pelvic area in someone with metastatic prostate cancer can sometimes make bones weaker especially if they've already been damaged by the cancer spreading there. Radiotherapy in this case is usually given to ease pain and control tumour growth.

Doctors will usually balance the benefits against the risk of fracture, and may consider giving bone strengthening drugs to protect the bones.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
