Breast Cancer Referral Timescale

Hi,

My wife visited her GP this morning because of a lump under her armpit. The GP has referred her to a breast screening clinic with the appointment being in a little over two weeks. I appreciate that all services are under huge pressure, but I was wondering if there are any possible options for changing/ideally bringing forward the date of the appointment for obvious reasons and also because it is in the middle of our family summer holiday.

This is extremely new news to us and I haven't had chance to look into it much, but any advice would be hugely appreciated.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear your wife has a breast lump and appreciate what an anxious tie this must be for you both.

A wait of around 2 weeks to be seen by the breast unit is the recommended time frame to be seen but if it clashes with your holiday, I suggest your wife speaks to them as soon as she can.

Whilst I am sure they will try and do what they can there is a possibility that they may have to give her a later day if there isn't anything sooner. As I am sure you will appreciate these are busy departments with many women noticing breast lumps/changes.

I hope you both know more soon and that everything turns out okay. Do bear in mind the majority of women seen in a breast clinic won't go on to be diagnosed with a breast cancer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
