cervical cancer

went for my smear test on Wednesday, and whist doing it, the nurse said she wasn’t happy with something and went to get a doctor, in turn he went on to say they wasn’t happy about something, at the time I was so anxious I just wanted to get out of there, they said they will be refereeing me to the hospital, I walked out of there not really understanding what was happening, A few hours later I got a text message from the doctors saying my letter was ready to collect, I went to collect it and it said on there ‘ Urgent Suspected Cancer - RAS Gynaecology- USC‘

i was a bit shocked becasue that word didn’t get mentioned whist in there, the hospital called me the next day and have booked me in for next week, I asked the lady on the phone if someone could talk me through what will happen at this appointment as I’m nervous, and she said it was more of a consultation? So now that’s confused me further.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen, or could tell me what could happen at the appointment so I can prepare myself. Thank you very much.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are feeling worried and can appreciate waiting to know more is is very stressful,

Being on the cancer pathway doesn't always mean a cancer diagnosis. In fact, the majority of people who are referred urgently do not have cancer. It just means that the doctors wants to be thorough and not delay anything if further tests are needed.

At the hospital they will be able to take a closer look at your cervix and any abnormal cells to determine the next steps. They often take biopsies ( tissue samples) of the abnormal areas to confirm the type and severity of the cells to guide the best treatment.

Remember cervical screening is all about the prevention of cancer by picking abnormality at an early stage where it can either be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal. It is rare for cervical cancer to be pick up through screening especially when women attend their appointments when invited and follow the advice given at follow up appointments.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
