Lymph nodes on neck and worried

Hello everyone,

I’m in a bit of a panic shall we say.

Around March time I found a LN on my right neck and thought I’d leave it a while to see if it would go down. I’m April I found another on the left side just above my collarbone. I left it another month then booked in with the GP. They did some bloods which showed very low ferritin of 3 (a long standing thing for me which they just palm off every time I go and never follow up) low platelets and marginally low HB of 115. She booked me a telephone appointment about 3 weeks later to discuss and prescribed iron tablets and booked me in for a physical follow up to feel my LNs.

A month later I went back and she found another under my jaw and decided to refer me to haematology on a 2WW as I also had night sweats (not soaking), extreme fatigue (which is getting worse and worse!!!) and SOB.

1 weeks later I’ve received a text saying I will be having a telephone appointment in 2 weeks time with a haematologist. What use will this be? I’ve had no ultrasound or repeat bloods so what will they be able to do over the phone? I’m very frustrated about this and feel like it will be a wasted appointment or say I’m fine to go with no further testing. Please can you guys give me some advice. I work in heath care so understand the NICE guidelines etc but feel like this is very frustrating.

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn what you are going through; this must not be easy.

Different hospitals will have different ways of managing the first appointment of an urgent referral.

Unfortunately, not being directly involved in the hospital, we cannot say what the first appointment will involve.

If you have a number you can contact, you could see if it's possible to have a face-to-face appointment instead of a telephone appointment, or you could try contacting the haematology department for advice.

I hope you can get some help with this. if you would like to get back to us feel free to give us a call we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Jemma
