Mastectomy - how long should the wait be for this surgery? I'm worried about the cancer spreading to my lymph nodes

Hi,

I have a 3.7cm x 2.5cm cancerous tumor in my left breast, the MRI shows no spread to lymph nodes. I had a biopsy over a month ago and the doctor still won’t give me anymore information but assuming in is estrogen receptor positive how soon should I get a mastectomy?
I was told the waiting list is up to 6 weeks and since the diagnosis was over a month ago is this an acceptable time? I read that the surgery should be performed no longer than month after diagnosis. I am worried it may spread to my lymph nodes before I can get a mastectomy.

Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn of your breast cancer diagnosis. I can appreciate that waiting for surgery must be very unsettling.

It is important to know that most cancers grow slowly, and waiting a few weeks is unlikely to affect the overall situation or outcome of any treatment.

I wondered if you had a specialist breast nurse (CNS) who you could speak to about your concerns, who knows your situation. Or if it is possible to contact the consultant's secretary to see if they have an idea when you are likely to be booked for your surgery.

Hospitals will do their best to meet the target waiting times, but with pressures on the NHS and staff shortages, this isn't always possible.

If you are unable to speak with your breast cancer team at the hospital, you may want to speak with your local PALS (Patient and Advice Liaison Service) for advice.

I hope this helps in some way and you get a date for your surgery soon.

Please get back to us for further information or support. if you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, freephone 0808 800 4040
