Marnie - developed bad shoulder pain since having lung surgery, and seems to be getting worse. Due to see surgeon in 3 weeks. Should I try and see him sooner?

Seven weeks ago I had an operation to remove a small part of my lung to revive a small tumor , the surgery was keyhole .

since coming out of hospital I have developed bad pain in my shoulder so much that I can’t lift my arm . Going to bed is a nightmare as when I get out in the morning it takes me hours to function . It seems to be getting worse and now radiating over my back to the other shoulder. I am taking co codamol every six hours but it seems to have no effect . My doctor gave me amitriline gets me to sleep but that’s it . I am due to see my surgeon  in three weeks should I try to see him sooner.

  • Hello Marne and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the discomfort that you have been experiencing.

Unfortunately pain is a common side effect after lung surgery and can be due to damage to the nerves. You can read more about possible problems after surgery

If you have a lung cancer nurse at the hospital you could try and ring them and ask whether they think you should be seen earlier. As it is only 3 weeks away they may not be able to fit you in to the clinic.

It would also be worth asking your lung nurse whether you could be referred to a physiotherapist for some shoulder exercises that you could slowly build up. It is important if you can, to keep moving the shoulder.

I wonder whether you can speak to your GP to see if there is another pain killer that you can have in-between taking the co-codamol.

With the increase in pain killers constipation may also be a problem so do be aware and make sure that you are drinking adequate amounts of fluid (at least 2 litres) and you are having enough fibre in your diet in the way of fruit and vegetables.

I hope that as time goes on the pain will become more bearable.

If you would like to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to do so. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
