Carcinoid syndrome

Hi, I’ve got no idea if this is even the right place. Went to A&E couple of weeks back for extreme flushing, heart palpitations and dizziness. They can’t find anything acutely wrong with me but have said they are considering carcinoid syndrome. I have done a 24 hours urine sample but am awaiting the results. The doctor said it isn’t cancer related but looking online, carcinoid syndrome links directly to NETs. I’m completely panicking and don’t know where to turn. I’ve started to think about all of the symptoms I’ve had for years but not sure if I’m just making it fit with something that may not even be the case. Anyone been in a similar situation?

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

I can appreciate this is a stressful time for you. NET tumours are difficult to diagnose, and can present from having various odd symptoms over time. Symptoms can be similar to other medical conditions, so diagnosis involves particular tests and investigations to get more clinical information. NETs are not the same, as we think of most other common cancers, so their treatments can be different. Some are slow growing, and have periods of being active and not. Some people can live with a NET diagnosis for a long time, and it is then treated as a chronic condition.

There is alot of information on Neuroendocrine Cancer UK which may help you at this time. Should you be diagnosed with a NET, (and that isn't known as yet for certain I appreciate), there is online forum support and support groups offered by Neuroendocrine Cancer UK.

I hope that you get to find out more soon about your situation,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
