Insufficient sample from endometrial biopsy

Why would this happen? I have to go back now for a camera assisted biopsy. I can’t believe I’ve got to go through all that pain again. I feel quite traumatised from it all. Why didn’t they just do the hysteroscopy in the first place?
and what does it actually mean? Does it mean nothing was found and they’re retesting to be sure? Or does it mean something was found and they’re double checking before diagnosing?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to learn that you need to have a repeat biopsy done; this must be frustrating.

Not being involved in your care, we cannot say why you didn't have a hysteroscopy to begin with. Whether the doctor felt they would be able to get a sample of tissue without the need for this.

Having an insufficient sample means that there isn't enough tissue for the pathologist to make a definite diagnosis. There may be a number of reasons, such as the womb lining may have been too thin, or there may have been difficulty in passing the instrument used through the cervix due to narrowing.

The best person to speak with about what happened would be the doctor who did the biopsy as they know your situation. I don't know if this is possible, if you know the name of the doctor.

I hope this reply helps in some way and you can get some answers soon.
