Post mastectomy flushes

I had a mastectomy a year past in April. I can’t remember the correct name but the cancer fed on eostrogen. It was the second time I had breast cancer, the first was a lumpectomy about 10 years ago.,

I have been ok since the mastectomy but now all of a sudden I am having hot flushes. If that was all I’d put up with it but it’s the horrible feeling before the flushing. I feel really ill and feel I’m going to pass out or have a panic attack. Then the flushing is really strong but I get relief when it’s over.

is this normal?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are having hot flushes and the horrible feeling you experience just before the flush like you're going to faint or have a panic attack. This can be caused by changes in your hormone levels especially if you are taking hormone treatment.

We would always recommend if this is an ongoing and troublesome symptom for you that you discuss this with your GP or specialist team so they can review you and advise you further. If you have a breast specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

In the meantime, we have some information on our website on how to manage hot flushes that may be helpful to you.

I hope things improve for you soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
