Colon Cancer Symptoms

Hi

my husband was diagnosed stage Iv colon cancer and died 6 weeks later from his tumour perforating his bowel.  The only symptom he had prior to diagnosis was tiredness but he had a busy new job so this wasn’t suspicious.  Prior to his diagnosis my husbands personality changed over approx 18 months and got worse final year before diagnosis - he became withdrawn, irritable had several outbursts towards me - he also did some quite cruel things whereas the previous 30 years he’d been a cheerful loving husband.  I assumed he was under pressure from his job and we had moved house - could the undiagnosed cancer have caused personality changes - his colon cancer had spread to his liver, lungs snd lymph nodes?  He was 54

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what you've been through. This must still be an incredibly painful time. Losing your husband so suddenly, and seeing such a change in his personality before that must leave you with a lot of unanswered questions.

It's difficult to say for sure if your husband's undiagnosed cancer could have caused his personality changes. We do know that in some people, advanced cancer can affect mood, thinking and behaviour especially if the cancer has spread to the brain. Also things like inflammation, fatigue, stress, or chemical imbalances may play a part.

When you have unanswered questions like this, we would usually advise you to speak to the team involved in your husband's care at the hospital or his GP. They are better placed to advise you as they were familiar with all his medical details.

If you feel over time you would like some bereavement counselling do get in touch with Cruse the bereavement charity.

I hope this has been of some help. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
