Fatigue and stage 4 appendix cancer - is this a sign I'm near the end?

Is it usual for fatigue to come on quite suddenly? I have stage four appendix & have been free of  symptoms pain etc for most of the time since diagnosis. But last few weeks suffered a bad night and day with pain and even since that resolved have been absolutely exhausted last few days. I now wonder if this is telling me I’m near or at the end.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are experiencing these symptoms, but it is difficult for me to pinpoint the exact reason for your fatigue. However, I can say that as the body becomes more unwell with stage 4 cancer that fatigue is very common.

If you have a palliative care nurse involved, do talk to them about what you are feeling. If you don't have one of these nurses, do talk to your doctor about a referral to this team, as they are experts in symptom management for patients in your situation.

It may be difficult reading, but we have a coping with cancer page which may have some answers to some of these questions at this time in your life.

Take care, and I hope you get support at this time. If you want to talk to the nurses then call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open Mon-Fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.

  • Hello Sarah.  I am also stage 4 cancer and like you I have been extremely fatigued lately......more than usual.  I am sorry to tell you that this is often a  sign that the end is near  I am sure you don't want any sugarcoating, and you would rather know the truth, and that is the truth.  Extreme fatigue happens when our bodies are shutting down and we are near the end.  MY thoughts are with you, because I know exactly how you feel, and it is not a nice place to be.  Take care my love, xx.

  • This is what i thought. And am trying to get my head around it.

  • Me too Sarah.  It's a harsh place to be isn't it?  To know that your body is breaking down and the end is near.  And it doesn't matter what platitudes or words of comfort people try to give you, the only thing that you can think of is that fairly soon you will lose this battle with the monstrous big C.  I honestly wish I knew  what to say to you, but I am in the same boat as you and I really don't know what to say............it's like being in a nightmare isn't it?

  • Hi Sarah

Fatigue is a debililtating aspect of cancer we all share. I dont think it is a good indicator of life expectancy though  Or I should have been gone years ago. The fact you've had a few weeks of pain and sleepless nights may be your body reacting to that.
