Breast Conserving Surgery

Hi

I have just had breast conserving surgery and my affected breast is now much smaller than my other breast. How long do I need to wait before having surgery on the other breast so that they more closely match

  • I waited two years for symmetrizing surgery after having a tumour and a substantial amount of tissue removed from my left breast.  The reason for the wait apparently is that it can take a year or two for the affected breast to settle, therefore any sooner you may end up with odd sized boobs.  I hope this helps - I now have the best pair of 70 yr old boobs this side of the Tamar

  • Hi Roberta -  thanks for taking the time to respond to my query.  I'm hoping to be able to say something similar once I've completed my treatment and the wait for a matching boob!  Looking for the postives in what's happening at the moment :)

  • Hi Netty25 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear you are going through breast cancer treatment. I can appreciate this must be a difficult time for you.

Following breast-conserving surgery, if there is a notable size difference between the breasts, it is advisable to postpone any further procedures until the completion of all treatments, including chemotherapy or radiotherapy if necessary. This interval is essential for your body to recover from the initial surgery and any subsequent radiation therapy. Additionally, it provides the surgeon with the opportunity to assess the ultimate size and shape of the reconstructed breast. This evaluation process may extend over several months or potentially a couple of years.

    I hope this information helps.
